Pop-up:

A Pop-up is a separate browser window appearing automatically at a specified point when a user opens a website in his browser. Mostly the Pop-up appears right on entering the site, sometimes when leaving the site. Usually it contains some form of advertisement or an opt-in form to subscribe to a mailing list.

With the heavy misuse of Pop-ups by certain sites (Pop-up spamming ) much to the annoyance of Internet users Pop-ups became frowned upon and Pop-up filters or blockers are now standard feature in every browser. Still they are a useful tool for Internet Marketers and moderate use (i.e. not several Pop-ups springing up at once or continuously making it almost impossible for the user to take a look at the site he wanted to see) can lead to good results and improved conversion rates.

Pop-ups today are often used as little squeeze pages with the intention to grab the user’s email address.

[Pop originally is imitative, resembling a short sound when something is hit; later, together with suffixes –up or -off the meaning was extended to “something appearing suddenly”]

Recommended Resources:

  • Impact Pop-up  is a little program that creates highly converting Pop-ups (allegedly unblockable). These can account for an up to 50% higher sales or signup rate.

  • Peel Away Ads  is an alternative to Pop-up ads with the same or better conversion rates but without annoying or irritating a visitor
