Podcast:
A Podcast is an audio file which is intended to be syndicated by special Podcast feeds. For users who have subscribed to a Podcast feed it is automatically downloaded to their computers or portable listening devices like iPods or MP3 players.
This is what a Podcast
distinguishes from any other audio file: A user subscribes to a
feed once (e.g. a feed for news, sports, business, financial
Podcasts or from any other imaginable category) and every new
audio file to this feed is automatically downloaded as soon as
he is connected to the Internet.
The term Podcast was coined from broadcasting and iPod but is a bit misleading as
there is not a broadcasting of an audio message in the usual sense. The audio file is simply made accessible on a server for download by the subscribers who then can play the file whenever they want; i.e. there is no general broadcast at a predetermined schedule.
Any device capable of reproducing sounds from a digital audio file can be used to listen to Podcasts, such as MP3 players, PDAs and even the latest generation of cell phones or digital cameras. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an iPod.
As Podcasting is an increasingly popular way of broadcasting communications it becomes an important way of getting one’s sales message out to potential customers.
