Hype:

Hype means giving something more importance than it deserves. A hyped up advertisement of a product promotes it in an overly sensational way which is not justified by it’s quality.

A Hype is sometimes created when a new product is introduced with a well planned prelaunch campaign when a lot of high class affiliates bombard their subscribers with a sequence of email promotions. It sometimes happens then that the product is sold out within a few days or even hours after the launch .

[Hype comes probably from early 20th century American underground slang hyper (as a verb) = swindle by overcharging or short-changing; The prefix hyper- originally meaning over- or in excess]
