External Link:

External Link is a
link  to a page of another website (i.e. another domain) whereas an internal link would direct to a page within the same website.

For example a link from www.nba.com to www.nfl.com would be an external link while a link from www.nba.com to www.nba.com/statistics/ would qualify as internal link.

[External comes from Latin externus = outside, outward;

Link comes from Old Danish lænkia = chain]

Recommended Resource:

  • One of the best resources on how to do your linking right is Jack Humphrey’s Power Linking Course which is highly recommended.
