Banner:

A Banner ad is a form of graphical advertisement on a website most often in a standard size of 468 x 60 pixels. It is supposed to attract a visitor’s attention to the graphic. A click on the Banner directs the visitor to the website of the advertiser.

Banner ads have lost importance in web marketing over the recent years because people more and more tend to ignore them (Banner blindness). This could temporarily be solved with the advent of animated banners but after a short while Banner blindness extended on these, too. Today web designers are even advised to avoid graphics in standard Banner formats as – even if they are not Banners– people tend to consider them as such and pay no attention to them.

[Banner goes back to Germanic and Gothic origin bandwa= sign]
