Affiliate
Link:
An Affiliate Link is an unique link which serves two purposes:
It directs a potential customer to the sales page of a product or service
By the specific structure of the link the tracking system on the sales website can assign the customer to the affiliate to whom the link belongs and credit him with the affiliate commission should the visitor buy
A typical affiliate link could look like this:
http://www.productname.com/?affiliate=12345
where www.productname.com would be the URL of the product’s sales page and 12345 would be the unique affiliate-ID. There are also much more complicated Affiliate Links.
Many merchants running an affiliate program place cookies on a visitors hard drive so sales can even then be assigned to the correct affiliate if he would not purchase the product on the first visit of the sales site but would come back within a predefined time span, such as 90 days or even 6 months, via another link. This makes an affiliate program much more attractive to potential affiliates.
[Affiliate comes from Latin affiliare = to be connected;
Link comes from Old Danish lænkia = chain]
